In this post, I will establish the pros and cons of renting a 2 Berth versus a 4 Berth Campervan for 2 Adults in New Zealand.
2 Berth Campervans / Motorhomes
Generally, 2 Berth campervan hires are less expensive than 4 Berths of the same quality. The interior is compact and offers limited spare room. The dinette doubles as the bed, which means that making and breaking down the bedding becomes a daily routine. The exception are some 2 + 1 Berth vehicles which feature a small table and seating for up to 3 people in the front of the vehicle along with the dinette/bed set-up in the rear. When renting a 2 Berth Campervan you need to be prepared to either leave the bed set-up and be flexible with your eating space or break the bed down in the morning and make it up again at night.
A big plus is the easy handling on the road, driving through cities and finding parking space. 2 Berths are more fuel economic and cost less on the ferry between the two islands. Saying that, I would like to add that some 2 Berths are up to 7 meters long, which do not provide any savings on ferry transports. The age of the vehicle also needs to be considered to estimate its fuel efficiency.
4 Berth Campervans / Motorhomes
4 Berth vehicle bodies are a lot bigger than 2 Berths and if you are not used to driving a big vehicle, it will take you a few days to get familiar with the handling and the size of it. Naturally, it offers a lot more interior space and comfort. The double bed above the driver’s cabin is permanent and the entire ground floor can be used as living space, with a good size dinette, seating and kitchen area.
If you value your personal space, a 4 Berth or even 6 Berth will be the most comfortable. The large size of the Campervan or Motorhome does not allow it to be very aerodynamic and fuel efficient. Be prepared to travel slower and giving way to faster traffic. The bigger Motorhome also provides a lot more storage space internally along with an external locker.
To sum it up, I recommend renting a 2 Berth Campervan if you plan to drive long distances and don’t mind being up-close with your travel companion.
Should you wish to take it easy, only change location every second day and like to have your own little home with everything set-up as you need it - a 4 Berth (or 6 Berth) is the better choice.
If you can afford it, a modern Deluxe 4 Berth with aerodynamic design, permanent bed and spacious bathroom is the ultimate way to go. The Wilderness Escape 4 is a glorious example for pure comfort and luxury.
