Arrival in New Zealand | Airport & Shuttle
Most campervan hire companies offer courtesy transfers from and to international airports in New Zealand. The main locations for campervan hire are Auckland and Christchurch, however, some companies are also located in the Wellington and/or Queenstown areas.
The free shuttle is usually also available from airport accommodation, however, this needs to be arranged before your arrival.
It is not recommended to collect a vehicle immediately after long-haul flights. A minimum rest of 8 hours should be taken to ensure safe travels. Jetlag can affect orientation and reaction time and should not be underestimated. If your flight arrives in the afternoon, you are best to stay at an airport hotel for the first night and catch the shuttle to the campervan depot the next morning. For arrivals earlier in the day, we would recommend having a coffee or lunch break before collecting your campervan. On your first day driving the vehicle it is advisable to pre-book a campsite close to your starting point. Do not drive long distances on your first day!
To organize your courtesy transfer with the campervan company, please give them a phone call once you are ready to be collected. All companies have a toll free contact number which can be called from any public phone or your own mobile phone. When calling the company, you will need to advise your surname and number of passengers. A company representative will collect you at the arranged meeting point as soon as possible.
Some larger companies (e.g. Maui, Britz, Apollo, etc.) offer an Online Pre-Check-In system where you can enter your arrival and personal details prior to your holiday. Advising the company of your estimated arrival time is essential to ensure that your vehicle is ready to go when you are.
Campervan depots are generally open 7 days a week from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Vehicles need to be collected and returned within these hours. A few companies offer an after-hours service for an extra charge. When booking your campervan make sure that you will have plenty of time to collect the vehicle. New Zealand immigration, baggage claim and customs all take time. If the airport is busy the whole process can take up to 1.5 hours!
At the campervan depot, a staff member will go through the rental contract with you. You will need to show your driver’s licence (with English translation) and sign the rental contract. Please take plenty of time to read through the contract and make sure to clarify any questions you may have. The campervan and its features will also be explained and demonstrated. The staff member might be in a rush to get you on the road, but it is essential to go through everything in detail to avoid misunderstandings or difficulties during your holiday. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!
Happy Driving & All the Best!
