Campervan Skiing Holidays | New Zealand
Cheap campervan hire prices in winter can be tempting to travel by campervan during a skiing holiday in New Zealand. Although this can work out perfectly fine, there are important factors to consider when choosing the right campervan type. Travelers must not be blinded by super-cheap daily rates, but evaluate the quality and vehicle features, comparing the various campervan types.
Although it is possible to book a modern, 1 to 3 year old, campervan for a minimal amount of money, it may not be a wise decision due to the lack of essential winter equipment, hidden fees or unfair rental terms and conditions. It is essential to invest plenty of time in choosing a vehicle to avoid disappointments or cold and damp winter nights.
Of course, if you don’t have the time to compare all options - We are always happy to help! We do all the work and send suitable campervan quotations to you within 24 hours.

Besides insulation, an independent heating source is the most important campervan feature. Independent heating means that it is not required to attach the vehicle to a 240 V power source in order to heat the living area. This heating source is usually gas but an increasing number of campervans is equipped with diesel heating.
Diesel heating has two advantages. One, it can also be used while driving and Two, there is no need to refill the gas canisters regularly.
For instance, campervans with diesel heating are offered by KEA Campers and Pacific Horizon Motorhomes. We inform you of the included heating source in our campervan quotations.
During winter travel, it is recommended to carry snow chains in case of unexpected snow storms. Most campervan providers charge extra for the hire of snow chains, where-else other companies already include them with their vehicles.
Double-glazing is still not readily available. Only KEA Campers provide double-glazed and well insulated campervan hire in the affordable price category. Double glazing is a great feature against condensation on the windows, but as long as your campervan has an independent gas or diesel heater, you will be comfortable.
Tip: When collecting the vehicle, some campervan companies are happy to provide additional duvets or blankets if required. Never hesitate to ask!
If you are planning to ski and drive your campervan on ski field access roads, you need to be aware of your responsibilities. Not all companies allow their campers to be driven on unsealed roads. In case of damage while driving on ski field access roads, you may be fully liable, as the insurance cover may not be sufficient - even when you pay for the highest insurance cover available!
KEA Campers, for example, do not allow their campervans to be driven on any unsealed ski field access roads. Please note: All ski fields, except Coronet Peak, are only accessible via unsealed gravel roads. As these roads can be very steep, with rock fall danger and snow cover, it may be best to catch a snow shuttle up the mountain anyhow - much safer & no hassle!
Should you bring your own ski gear, make sure the campervan offers an external storage compartment which can fit skis. It’s no good to have skis inside of the vehicle, as they can be a hazard. Most ski fields offer ski gear hire, so you do not have to transport the equipment up the mountain.
As always in New Zealand - Be aware of the weather!
Driving in the New Zealand alps can be very dangerous as weather conditions change quickly. Many, often experienced, skiers get caught out in snow or high wind storms which can appear within a short period of time. Stay up to date with weather forecasts to avoid dangerous situations.
