Apollo Campervans & Motorhomes | New Zealand NEWS
Recently, we caught up with Daniel Kunzi and Courtney Lynch at the Apollo depot in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Daniel is the Executive Sales Manager for Apollo Motorhome Holidays and was accompanied by his assistant Courtney to visit the Auckland and Christchurch Apollo depots. Their head office is located in Brisbane, Australia.
The company operates 4 different vehicle fleets, grouped by quality and age. The Apollo Motorhome Holidays family consits of:
- StarRV - first class, guaranteed less than 12 months old
- Apollo - main brand, between 1 and 3 years old
- Cheapa Campa - budget range, 3 to 5 years old
- Hippie Camper - practical backpacker-style campervans
With 23 branches across New Zealand, Australia, the USA and Canada, Apollo Motorhome Holidays is the largest privately owned and operated RV company in the world.
During our meeting in Christchurch we discussed upcoming changes to the Apollo products for the season 2016/17 and current market developments in New Zealand.
All StarRV campervans now feature gas central heating, which is a big improvement and very useful with New Zealand’s changeable weather. Some of the new StarRV Aquila 2 Berths also feature a third passenger seat behind the driver and a second dining table. Combined with the 180 degree swivel mechanism, the front transforms into a second dining area allowing the rear bed(s) to remain permanent.
New to Apollo is a range of Mercedes Benz campervans with automatic transmission and gas central heating. However, the majority of the fleet still consists of VW vans with manual transmission. (The preferred vehicle model can be requested but not guaranteed.)
Also new to the entire Apollo Motorhome Holidays fleet is an additional One Way Fee, which applies to all hires from Auckland to Christchurch throughout the year and both directions during peak season (1 October - 31 March). When you book your campervan hire through us, ProCamper Limited, you can be assured that all fees and charges are included.
For safety reasons, most campervan hire providers impose logical road restrictions in their rental contracts.
Prohibited Roads are: Ninety Mile Beach (driving on any kind of beach is never a good idea!), North of Colville Township in Coromandel, Ball Hut Road at Mt Cook, and Skippers Road in Queenstown.
A new addition to Apollo’s restricted roads list is the Crown Range Road between Wanaka and Queenstown. The Crown Range is not suitable for large vehicles due to many hairpin bends and narrow sections. But don't worry - the alternative route through the valley is also very picturesque and much safer.
Unfortunately, due to insurance cover changes, Apollo Motorhome Holidays clients are now fully responsible for damage to the awning, overhead and underbody of the campervan. Even if the highest insurance cover is selected, these types of damage are still not covered.
We voiced our concerns about this new regulation as it is a point of insecurity for the client and in our opinion it will be a deciding factor to the client’s campervan choice.
While we were at the depot, we also inspected a range of Apollo campervans. As in previous years, the vehicles were well presented and in clean and tidy condition.
A unique feature to Apollo’s 4 Berth campervans is the electronic bed-lift system of the rear double bed. With the push of a button, the bed is stored in the ceiling, making room for the dining table and seating area. No need to make-up/break-down the bed every day. Genius!
We have worked with Apollo for over four years now and look forward to a close and strong partnership in the future.
With Apollo Motorhome Holidays you can be assured to receive quality, good value and excellent customer service and support throughout your New Zealand campervan hire holiday.
